Arriving at the orphan home!

Jesse and I finally made it to Pokhara, which is nestled on a lake in the foothills of the Himalayas in the middle region on Nepal.  After some investigating, we’ve decided to help the Annapurna Self-Sustaining Orphan Home.  It’s run by a nice woman named Sarada, who’s been helping children for six years.  She looks after 25 kids, between the ages of 6 months and 14 years.  On site, several local woman also help run the home by doing house work, and caring for the kids in the evenings.  However, Sarada is always looking for volunteers and more donations are needed as the home is in dire need of repairs and dry goods.

Please see Orphan Homes We Work With for more information on the home. After getting a tour of the home and assessing what needs to be done, we are heading to the market on Sunday with Sarada.  The home needs dry foods such as rice and flour.  They also need bed sheets, pots, several free-standing closets for the rooms, they need 1 refrigerator, and slippers for all 25 kids need to be purchased. The most important item is the dry food.  This will cost $400 for a month’s supply.

When I arrived this morning, they only had 1 large bag of rice left to feed 25 children.  This will maybe last only 5 more days.  They next known volunteer to arrive to the home won’t be until July.  So this is at an utmost importance.  When I told her I could buy that for her, she said that she had asked God yesterday to send her someone like me.  And today, I arrived.  In addition, we need to repair several screens on the windows because the kids keep sticking their hands through the holes and are getting cut.  I’m going to walk around town this evening to find a tourist who might also be a carpenter.  I’m convinced fate will lead me to him (or her)!

Please check back in a few days, and bookmark this page for future announcements.
